There’s certainly no mistaking that this steakhouse flies the flag for Argentina: a wagon wheel announces the restaurant’s location at the bottom of a wooden staircase, a photo of Maradona greets diners, & the artwork depicts rural life in South America. It may be a touch Disney, but El Gaucho’s steaks are the real McCoy: thick slabs of well-hung meat, imported from the home country, arrive at the table pleasingly charred, with juicy grilled peppers & thick-cut chips on the side. Other Argentinian staples, such as terracotta bowls filled with sizzling hot grilled cheese, & fat chorizos, are also proudly in evidence, while bottles of native Quilmes beer show off the restaurant’s patriotic stripes. It all goes down a storm with locals & homesick sudamericanos crying for Argentina.
