Square Meal Review of Dozo Sushi ?

Split over two floors, this good-looking, minimalist Japanese joint comprises an intimate basement with snug-like booths, & a ground-floor dining area flanked by a busy sushi counter, with a larger-than-life geisha painted on one wall. Although raw fish takes up half the extensive menu, Dozo goes beyond the confines of its title by offering edamame, grilled kushiyaki skewers, bowls of ramen noodles & various chef’s specials such as Wagyu beef with eryngii mushrooms & red miso, as well as bento boxes. Helpful staff are happy to give suggestions: on our visit, a warm starter of quivering tofu fried in garlic miso was tooth-meltingly sweet, while the soft-shell crab salad was delicate & perfectly crisp, but somewhat overpowered by lashings of rich sweet-chilli mayonnaise.

    Wrap Your Lips Around This :: Dozo

    This intimate Japanese restaurant sits in a corner of Soho and serves more than just sushi, although that’s also done well here. Dozo is fitted out to imitate a traditional Japanese Tatami, complete with sunken wicker seating. Navigating into positon is a clumsy affair, first scrambling onto an elevated seating block and then shuffling down; a cushion under your bum and your legs in the hole under the table. This is as rudimentary as the evening will get, the food and service being nothing less that elegant. Meticulous slices of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and mackerel sashimi are cut with the precision that this cuisine is famed for, and taste as fresh as you’d like. Aburi sushi is a sushi special at Dozo, made with bigger slices of fish or meat, which are lightly grilled. The sea urchin (otoro aburi) is decorated with salmon roe (ikura) and the Japanese citrus yuzu, whilst the minced wagyu aburi is served as a semi-cooked tartare; loosing much of what this cut is famed for in the mincing process...

    laymytable :: Dozo Soho

    Working in Soho I am spoilt for choice when it comes to food and with new places popping up so often there’s an abundance of restaurants to take your pick from. I’ve been burned before in getting too attached to places however, so I try to spread the love around. My lost loves include Mooli’s and Mangosteen. I literally cried when I realised they weren’t coming back. After mixing it up and trying everywhere and anywhere, there is one place in particular that not only do I keep coming back to, but it actually gets me a bit excited because it really is a treasure trove. I love this place and its food is exquisite. It’s in the heart of Soho on Old Compton Street and although the tables are a little hard to sit at, the hollowed out ground that you have to crouch your way into, definitely not a good idea to wear a skirt to this establishment, it’s worth the unladylike wrench to get yourself in there...

  3. Dozo Japanese Restaurant is set on two floors and one can say they've made a cool setting for such small space. They have normal dining tables and Japanese-style dining tables where a sunken area gives you the illusion of sitting on the floor and funky lights. For starters we had salmon skin rolls (£4.30 / 6 pieces) which I loved! The salmon skin was very crispy and flavourful. I don't like mayo drizzled all over food (especially sushi rolls) but on this occasion it balanced the salty skin and added a much needed creamy texture...

    S.W. Foodie :: Dozo - Japanese sushi restaurant Soho

    Each month it seems i'm finding a new favourite sushi place to knock the socks off the previous title winner... Dozo has two spots in London; one in South Ken and the other, which my cousin and I visited, in Soho. The tables are at floor level with holes for your feet below - getting into ones seat isn't the most flattering of manoeuvres. However, they want to make the place feel as though you're inside a Japanese tatami so traditional seating is a must. PH and I, both going through 'health' fixes through January, decided to concentrate mainly on the sushi and 'raw' food although the ramen that was being slurped next to us did look rather inviting!...
