Square Meal Review of Khamsa Brixton ?

It’s rare to find a restaurant focusing solely on Algerian cooking, which is what makes Khamsa so intriguing. Surrounded by pizza joints on a characterless stretch of Acre Lane, the restaurant has clearly been put together on a budget: witness the glossed white floor tiles, hanging drapes & functional furniture. However, it’s the good-value cooking that does the talking. Food comes packed with boldly spiced North African flavours, providing a real culinary adventure. Start with a choice of seven salads to share between two – perhaps kamounia (spiced chickpeas topped with Algerian merguez sausage) – then move on to a creamy pot of braised chicken with sultanas, spiced with cumin & paprika, & thickened with ground almonds. The chef makes excellent sweetened pastries for dessert, while the smiling host provides speedy service.

We went with a group of 5 friends to this very small, but therefore intimate restaurant. It feels more like a family living room than a restaurant and makes the whole experience the better for it. The restaurant owners are so warm hearted and welcoming. But the outstanding thing about Khamsa is its food. Freshly prepared in the open kitchen, we received such a tasty meal. Each of us had chosen a different menu and we all were ummming and aaaahing, how lovely the different dishes were. Even though the portions were very filling, we almost ate every little grain, as it would have been such a shame wasting anything and not to explore the different tastes unfolding with every bite. Spicy, but not too hot chicken, cinnamon, raisins, sweet potatoes, nuts, couscous with fresh pommegrenate seeds, taste combinations we don't have every day. The bring a bottle policy makes it a bargain night out and you can choose the better wine for it. However, there is a wicked juice menu, so nobody needs to leave thirsty. We did not try the deserts, which looked lovely on the website, but I am sure we will be back to taste those next. Very glad we found this little gem.

A local haunt, this is no frills, authentic north African cuisine. There is always a good buzz and the husband and wife team are excellent hosts. There is a great little area downstairs that is ideal for larger groups, i enjoyed a birthday there with 12 friends. The BYO policy lends itself to making this a really good value night out. The portions are generous and for me, as a vegetarian, the starters are a highlight.
