It’s rare to find a restaurant focusing solely on Algerian cooking, which is what makes Khamsa so intriguing. Surrounded by pizza joints on a characterless stretch of Acre Lane, the restaurant has clearly been put together on a budget: witness the glossed white floor tiles, hanging drapes & functional furniture. However, it’s the good-value cooking that does the talking. Food comes packed with boldly spiced North African flavours, providing a real culinary adventure. Start with a choice of seven salads to share between two – perhaps kamounia (spiced chickpeas topped with Algerian merguez sausage) – then move on to a creamy pot of braised chicken with sultanas, spiced with cumin & paprika, & thickened with ground almonds. The chef makes excellent sweetened pastries for dessert, while the smiling host provides speedy service.
