It doesn’t quite have the Oktoberfest authenticity of its City Road sibling, but with a travel poster or two, some oversized beer pumps & dirndl-clad fräuleins dispensing foaming mugs of beer, the second Bavarian Beerhouse nevertheless conjures up litres of Germanic joviality underneath the arches near Fenchurch Street station. Erdinger wheat beers & premium Warsteiner or Krombacher lagers are served in different measures, & the boozy inventory extends to Kaltenberg light beer from the König Ludwig brewery, radler (German-style shandy) & schnapps galore, from chilled Jägermeister on tap to traditional obstler. The food is as Teutonic as it gets, which means anything from spicy obatzda cheese to slim, herby Nuremberg bratwurst, plus mountainous helpings of Munich-style pig’s trotter with sauerkraut, gravy & dumplings.
