Squirreled away in the depths of Highgate Wood – a patch of ancient woodland between Muswell Hill & Highgate tube station – this happy café is a real beauty on glorious sunny days when the plant-strewn terrace is packed with families carousing under green parasols. If the weather closes in, however, you can always retreat to the ‘pavilion’ next to the old cricket pitch – a pretty building festooned with wisteria & climbing roses. On offer are savoury & sweet treats aplenty, ranging from wholesome soups, burgers & chips, pasta dishes, colourful salads & mezze dips to home-baked almond, lemon & polenta cake, plum muffins, warm brownies & so on. There’s also a hatch serving coffee & ice cream to take out.
