Following a £40m refurbishment, the West End’s legendary Hippodrome is back – this time as a casino. The interiors have been sympathetically restored to their pre-Stringfellow glory, when lions and dwarves provided decadent entertainment and stars such as Harry Houdini and Judy Garland graced the stage. Inevitable bling comes from shiny, 3D wall coverings and floors strewn with pennies, but bare, oversized light bulbs, reclaimed pulleys and original metal girders give the dining room a relaxed, ‘backstage’ feel. Check out the gambling action on the floor below while perusing a comprehensive menu that runs from calorific comfort food (‘millionaire’s mac and cheese’ with black-truffle shavings) to well-timed rib-eye steaks with triple-cooked chips, and ‘Talk of the Town’ specials including luxurious lobster ‘fishfingers’ with spicy wasabi mayo. Fun desserts such as knickerbocker glory also tempt, but fruit-heavy summer pudding wins the day.

londonfoodaholic :: REVIEW: Heliot, Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square
The décor at both the casino and restaurant are bordering low key Las Vegas tackiness. But I think that is the charm of the place, it’s all about the flashing lights and flowing alcohol to keep you inside, and of course the food. There really is no reason to ever go home, right? Unless you run out of money of course. We started our evening with a cocktail from the bar which has been developed by the well-known Tony Conigliaro. The American Sour is particularly good and I would definitely make an excuse to come here again for cocktails...

We Love Food, It :: Heliot restaurant at the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square, 42-43 Cranbourn Street, London, WC2H 7AN
If we were to tell you that we had a great night out at the Hippodrome, you’d probably think we were a little crazy and/or drunk! To be honest if this review was done a few years back we would have to agree with you. I last had the displeasure of staggering out of the Hippodrome after a work’s awards night and was left with the memories of a dark somehow claustrophobic nightclub with damp, sticky carpets and overpriced drinks… Not good! But all that has changed and the recently opened Hippodrome Casino is now a spacious, welcoming and reasonably priced venue in the heart of the West End that’s open 24/7...
