With consultant Nick Strangeway & the Mexican Tequila Board involved, the offer at Wahaca’s downstairs bar has gone upmarket. The focus is now on some 80 sorts of premium agave spirit, which are housed in a funky lemon cage – part of a makeover that also introduces Babyfoot tables & late-night DJs to the mix. House call El Tesoro de Don Felipe, the base for fine fruit-flavoured margaritas, bears no relation to the slamming firewater used elsewhere; otherwise, try the ‘Tequila experience’ (a flight of three served with sangrita), or trade up to Calle 23 Reposado, drunk straight. Chelada – a beery margarita served with lime juice in a salt-rimmed glass – is also good for summer chilling. Reasonably priced, top-notch street food includes pork pibil, quesadillas, moist bean burritos & churros.
