A new kid on Chelsea Green, the Markham Inn makes its intentions clear with a smart black facade: this is a polished operation aiming for the long haul. A curved black bar sets the tone, before snappily dressed staff lead customers through to the warmly lit, boldly decorated dining room. The menu comes on an A3 sheet, with most starters doubling as sharing plates & a concise cocktail list mixing old favourites with young contenders. To begin, a so-so tomato & basil soup was jazzed up with a ricotta ravioli garnish, while mains delivered a gut-busting burger as well as two thick-cut lamb chops complemented by melt-in-the-mouth aubergine & pesto. A chunky apple pie with damson coulis finished things off nicely. The Markham isn’t trying to punch above its weight, & the whole place already seems comfortable in its role as a quality local eatery. What’s more, prices are pleasingly low.
