Square Meal Review of Cabana ?

Seasoned restaurateurs Jamie Barber & David Ponte (Hush, Momo et al) have teamed up for this relaxed riff on the in-vogue Brazilian barbecue theme. Rio-born Ponte knows all about his homeland’s ‘churrascaria’ traditions, & the new venture serves gutsy morsels in a hand-made, streetwise setting of plank floors, poster-lined walls & banquettes upholstered with recycled jeans from São Paulo favelas. ‘Cabanistas’ circulate through the room, flaunting colour-coded skewers loaded with everything from marinated chicken thighs or chimichurri rump steak to giant portobello mushrooms with haloumi. Order pao de queijo (cheese dough balls), palm heart ‘pastels’ or chicken empadas on the side, & finish with something from the bespoke frozen yoghurt bar. ‘Lovely people, & great with kids’, commented one South American mum.

I went for lunch to the newly opened Brazilian restaurant Cabana @ St. Giles last Sunday with my husband and 2 year old toddler. I was greeted by lovely people who couldn't do enough to accommodate the appetite and creativity of my little girl (not only they gave her crayons and a drawing mat but her ‘own’ adult like bib). They didn't have a highchair yet, but we were seated on the jeans sofas so my daughter could comfortably reach the table and eat.

We had salmon ceviche, that as a Southamerican I can only classify as a bit different than the usual but DELICIOUS and bolinhos & cheese bread for my daughter.
Then we went onto the mains. We were explained the system… you order some sides and the Cabanistas come to your table every 5 minutes with different meat, chicken, prawn and veggie skewers (direct from the grill) and you chose what you want. Each time you chose a skewer, they put a different stamp on your placemat to keep a record for your bill. When you want a break, you just turn the beermat on the corner of your table. All very tasty and fantastic for sharing!!! Make sure you do try the complimentary chimichurry, as it elevates the flavour of the meat to another level. Enough choice whether you love or not spicy food.
Then dessert… we tried the delicious cheesecake with dulce de leche and the frozen yogurt topped with fresh fruit… yummmy!!!

I can recommend this restaurant to people who want something different and delicious to eat with friends or their significant other. The setting is very funky, spacious and open, so I can imagine that some tables at the back can be very romantic in the evening. The service is really good and comes with a smile. Apparently they have also opened a sister restaurant in Westfield Stratford, which I'm sure I'll visit very soon with some friends who adore Capirinhas and South American flavours.
