This trailblazing purveyor of quality coffee has held firm to its aim to nurture fair relationships with its worldwide suppliers since it opened more than 30 years ago. From a sweet, full-bodied Brazilian coffee to a spicy Indonesian blend, Monmouth’s beans are catnip to caffeine lovers. The beans are roasted and sold in-store; there’s also space to sit down and savour a cup alongside a tasty pastisserie, sourced from nearby bakery Paul and Villandry, or perhaps a wintery fresh-cream truffle made by local chocolatier Sally Clarke.

I love a good cup of coffee, and since moving to London I've become increasingly snobby about the quality of my caffeine fix. With the abundance of fantastic coffee shops across the capital (Workshop Coffee Co and Caravan are two of my favourites), Starbucks just can't compete anymore, and I'm constantly on the lookout for new and better things. One place I've been meaning to try forever is the Monmouth Coffee Company, so when I passed through Seven Dials this weekend I took my chance, and dragged my friend inside to check it out...

Monmouth is regularly touted as the best coffee shop in London. There is much hype surrounding the place, which usually means only one thing… an earth shattering disappointment is in store. But a coffee shop attracting such acclaim from caffeine fuelled Londoners can’t be bad, can it? Do we believe the hype? Have we been brainwashed into thinking Monmouth coffee is the sweet nectar of the caffeine Gods, brought down unto Borough Market to perk up tired city dwellers, when in fact it is much the same as Starbucks? There’s only one way to find out, one must sample. Easier said than done, Monmouth has a queue outside all the time...
