It’s small, it’s dark, it’s loud and it’s as cool as a cucumber on a glacier – although friendly staff ensure that this moody Hoxton hangout is never too cool for its own good. There is a wine list (featuring a commendable number by the glass) and some decent beers to choose from, but Happiness Forgets is all about innovative, fun and damn fine cocktails, served in a ‘low-rent’ candlelit basement with ox-blood walls. Adam’s apple is an earthy mix of Calvados and gentian-flavoured Suze liqueur shaken with citrus juice, honey and celery bitters, but also check out Mr McRae (an evolution of gin and tonic), sherry-based Jerezana or tantris sidecar (Cognac, Calvados, chartreuse, triple sec, lemon and pineapple juice). They no longer do any food, so suck on a lemon if you’re hungry.
