Square Meal Review of Bishopsgate Kitchen ?

Benugo’s second foray into the City is a bright & breezy space a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street station, with shelves bursting with tempting produce to eat in or purchase. A communal wooden table holds centre stage, bearing gleaming Dualit toasters at breakfast time & cute herb pots later on. Early risers can enjoy white chocolate & raspberry muffins, or poached duck eggs on sourdough toast, while lunch brings boards of charcuterie (serrano ham, lomo, bresaola) with some mozzarella & chilli arancini, plus mains ranging from 28-day Angus rib-eye to the Bishopsgate burger in a toasted brioche bun. Top marks for the drinks list, too, which features a dozen wines by the glass, as well as a good range of spirits – although it’s a shame to see the wines served in cheap tumblers.

It's rare for me to return to any restaurant, particularly when time is not of the essence and there is a wide range of eatery options in the vicinity. As such, it is a huge confession to admit that not only have I been to Bishopsgate Kitchen at least four times in the past few months, I've also not yet managed to get past one particular dish. Now granted, poached duck eggs on ratatouille, manchego with sour dough does not sound like a must-order, but ohmigod, it is just such a lovely combination of flavours and colours, especially when you pierce the egg and a wonderful creamy yellow oozes onto the ratatouille. Comfort food that feels like it should be good for you, genius! I tend to agree with the previous reviewers here although have to stay that I have found the staff somewhat stand-offish, although they do tend to warm up as the meal progresses. I wasn't too bothered by the all glass frontage, although a vista onto the RBS building is perhaps not everyone's cup of tea! That said, you won't be that bothered by the view once the food arrives. I'm back there tomorrow and really want to attempt the HUGE burger, but can already hear the eggs a-calling!

I agree with the last reviewer that I am torn with giving this place the brilliant review it deserves or keeping quiet so I can always get a table here! I have been several times at different times of the day and it is the perfect place to meet friends, share meze and drink wine or just sit and catch your breath with a cup of tea watching the world whizz by out of the large windows. Friendly and efficient service, delicious food. Feels like the City's best kept secret. If you visit on a week day before 5:30 check out the library in the attached Bishopsgate Institute, beautiful!

This is the first time I have been to this little restaurant in Spitalfields. At first I was a little intimidated by the all glass frontage which reminded me somewhat of George Best's goldfish bowl house of the 70s. But there were no paps here, just laid back “normal” people enjoying each others company without a care in the world. Isn't this what eating out is suppose to be like. Attentive unobtrusive service, genuine recommandations.

I don't want to recommend this place too much because I want to keep it all to myself.

A really lovely little restaurant, which always makes you feel welcome event if you are just having a few sharing plates. Great food, which shows imagination without being over the top. The chorizo scotched quails eggs are particularly good.
