Square Meal Review of Assaggetti ?

Climbing aboard the small-plates bandwagon, this Italian newcomer is the brainchild of Stefano Fraquelli, the man behind Knightsbridge’s Zia Teresa & the Getti restaurants. The name translates to ‘a selection of small dishes’ in Italian, so expect food that’s designed to be shared, from stuffed artichokes & peppers to pizzettine & traditional beef carpaccio – music to the ears of the pre- & post-theatre crowds of Haymarket. The restaurant interior mixes vintage finds with a New York vibe: think oversized glass chandeliers, vintage mirrors & worn oak tables, while the drinks list goes heavy on Italian wines and beers, with an admirable range available by the glass & carafe.

I took my Mother for pre-theatre lunch on Sat 17 March.

The welcome was v good and sadly it then went rapidly downhill- long waits to be served, two mains ( not the tapas) arrived with 10 mins and two chases in between. The chicken fricasse arrived on a plate with chicken in what looked like chicken soup with one lettuce leaf and half a cherry tomato- really quite strange and apparently tasted dreadful. The spaghetti ragu was fine- but freezing by the time my Mother's main arrived.

The chianti – second most expensive wine on the wine list- had the astringent qualities of paint stripper.

The staff were under prepared and frankly hopeless- the waitress had no idea what she was serving. The managers stood in huddles or doing paperwork.

Really this place is to be avoided! The Spaghetti House up the road would have been a better choice. Huge disappointment.
