Square Meal Review of Caxton Grill at St Ermin's Hotel ?

Located in the plush St Ermin’s Hotel, this upmarket grill, with its modern dark-wood decor, tempts well-heeled St James residents as well as tourists. The menu covers British classics such as mackerel and horseradish with salt-roasted baby beets, eight-hour short rib of beef with smoked pancetta, & whole Norfolk lobster with a sauce of garlic, cream & honey (made by the colony of bees that reside on the hotel’s rooftop), while the kitchen’s on-trend Josper grill churns out hearty steaks & chops. Drinkers will want to explore the range of ‘flights’ – a set of three wines or whiskies grouped under a common theme, with poetic names like Elevation or Velvet for the former, Wisdom and Robert Burns for the latter. Look out for good-value set menus at lunchtime, too.

    Originally went there for a Food4Media junket and had great demo of the Josper Charcoal Grill by Hus the executive chef. Liked the place and thought I'd go back for a ‘regular’ night. Went for my birthday with the better half! Not that busy mid week but it was end of January and a particularly bitter night; which explains why I marked the atmosphere down a bit. The staff were expecting us, they were attentive, well trained, knowledgeable and friendly, top marks all round. Place is beautiful great for lunch or dinner, private or business. I'll come back to the starter in a moment the; reason for writing this review! Main course was mixed grill and mixed seafood platter, both great although cooler than ideal! Shared a desert. Wine selection and advice was nicely above average. Only down point they frond upon supplying a doggy bag. However the starter; we had the Rope grown Shetland Mussels in white Rioja and chives…by a mile the BEST MUSSEL course I have ever had in any restaurant anywhere…FACT!

    Professional and friendly staff, attentive but not intrusive.
    Beautifully presented food, prepared with care, …the steak is amazing!
