Square Meal Review of Hawksmoor Guildhall ?

Dark leather, white tiles and copper tones create a mood of weathered solidity at Hawksmoor Guildhall. The bar is a handsome space, sharing the restaurant’s clubby masculinity but with an open, airy feel and pleasing informality all its own. It’s a proper setting for some serious cocktail drinking: order classics off-menu or allow yourself to be educated by the list’s sophisticated flavours and engrossing tasting notes. From the in-house selection, try a fancy gin cocktail (spiked with orange curaçao and orange bitters), sip a citrusy Hawksmoor Collins or tickle your arteries with a ‘full-fat’ old fashioned, made with butter-infused bourbon. To eat, graze on Marmite and cheese straws, Tamworth pork belly ribs and lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, or order a gargantuan steak from the full restaurant menu. Noise levels are civilised, despite the raunchy guitar-rock soundtrack that accompanies proceedings.

  1. If you had mentioned the name Hawksmoor to me five years ago, the only association I would have made was with London architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, protegé of Sir Christopher Wren and architect of at least six beautiful London Churches. Anybody who has walked around Spitalfields market or traveled on the DLR from the City to the Docklands has certainly seen one of them, serene and beautiful. But these days when the name Hawksmoor is mentioned, the association that people most often make is with one of the city’s most popular steak restaurants, one of the first to break the Gaucho’s Argentine-themed stranglehold on the premium steak market. Today you can get your Hawksmoor carnivore fix in one of their four London locations, and it was to the branch in Basinghall Street near the Guildhall that I made my way last year for a dinner matching their food with Italian wines...

  2. The thought of Hawksmoor food elicits an almost instinctive and automatic response of elaborate salivation and craving that is fueled by some orgasmic past culinary experiences. By now Hawksmoor‘s steaks are legendary and lately they’ve gained some notoriety for their burgers as well. With the passing of time, ever changing London food fads and stiff competition from the Goodman and Lobster & burger chain, Hawksmoor has expanded it’s menu with burgers and seafood dishes...

    SamTheFoodFan :: Hawksmoor, Guildhall

    One of our good friends in South Africa regularly comes to London for business. On his last trip here we got talking about food and I was telling him about the amazing restaurants in this fair city. In particular, I was waxing lyrical about the fabulous steaks you could get here. He basically laughed in my face! "There is no such thing as a decent steak in London!". He needed to be taught a lesson and what better place to go to than Hawksmoor? I don't want to come over all gushy, but to me, Hawksmoor - whichever branch you visit - does the best steak in London!...

    Saying it straight :: Hawksmoor. I nearly fainted.

    I have to make a big fat confession before I start. I was meant to review this for The Lawyer for breakfast. I did have the breakfast, sharing the room with only two other punters, which, given the size of the place was a little disconcerting, but I didn’t get round to posting the review and I need to rectify that. The breakfast was fine by the way, but unless they get more people in to have it, I can’t see it’s worth their while to staff up to fill that cavernous space. And it’s a bit grim for breakfast, being underground. But there you go...

  5. Breakfast at Hawksmoor: Although I’m a Londoner, it’s a long time since I worked in the City.  But, I do love a good English breakfast, so when I was offered the chance to review the breakfast at Hawksmoor Guildhall, I was thrilled.  Hawksmoor is a small group of London based restaurants, best known for their steaks.  The Guildhall branch is open for breakfast from Monday to Fridays – opening at 7am and finishing service at 10am.  Being fainthearted, I booked the latest reasonable slot – so when we arrived at 9.30 the restaurant was about a quarter full.  The entrance is quite deceptive, the large restaurant and bar are downstairs. The breakfast menu offers a wide range of dishes including the Full English which I chose, usually served with eggs (missing from my plate by choice!).  Really there’s little to fault in the dish, meaty sausages, firm and well flavoured bacon.  There’s a nice portion of real black pudding, a piece of hashbrown and a good portion of nutty baked beans.   My friend chose scrambled eggs with mushrooms.  Perhaps the only disappointment with the Hawksmoor breakfast was that at 9.30 there was no more smoked salmon, which was her [...]

  6. Tucked away next to the guildhall, Hawksmoor is very easy to walk past, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for. If you spot a swarm of city bankers in white shirts then you’re probably heading in the right direction. Stepping through the enormous door you’re transported into a grand entrance, very dimly lit and manned by extremely quirky staff, who fit in with the restaurant well. Head down the stairs and you arrive at a lovely tiled bar where you can sip on delicious cocktails before you head into the main restaurant...
