Square Meal Review of Hawksmoor Guildhall ?

The third branch of steak-haven Hawksmoor is the biggest of the bunch, with that now-familiar art deco feel & a ‘tasteful’ dining room replete with wood panelling & huge leather banquettes. As ever, beef dominates proceedings, with a new six-course tasting menu topping the bill (think beef tea, beef-shin macaroni, & so on), while early risers can set themselves up with an epic Hawksmoor breakfast (£35 for two), featuring smoked bacon chops, ‘trotter baked beans’ & short-rib bubble & squeak. If the restaurant is full, make a beeline for the decent-sized bar, where you can enjoy the same menu, as well as drooling over the much-fêted cocktail list. Loud City suits dominate here, fuelled by US & Italian pickings from the first-rate wine list, but efficient staff manage to keep a lid on any boisterous antics.

I don’t know if it is because the City is full of red blooded, thrusting macho types, as opposed to the West End, which is full of media, arty types, but whilst I’ve had decidedly average experiences at steakhouses out west, those at the City outposts of Goodman and Hawksmoor have been uniformly exceptional.

Hawksmoor Guildhall looks just like the Seven Dials room: big, high ceilings, wooden bits, no windows. The food is similar too, with steaks to the fore, chips with everything and a bit of green stuff thrown in for show.

Having made the mistake of ordering one of the sharing steaks at the Seven Dials, here I went straight to the back of the beast: a 55 day aged D-rump. Rare. With triple cooked chips. And some green stuff, just so it looked better.

Maybe it was because the steak was just so bloody good, juicy on the inside, charred on the out, but everything just seemed better here than out west. The waiting staff, the wine, the chips, the bone marrow gravy. It was all as near to bovine-based dining perfection as I have had for a long, long time.

Not cheap mind, but bankers still need to be relieved of their bonuses after all and, if Osborne won’t do it, fair play to the team behind Hawksmoor for taking a crack at it.

    steak!!!…it's a piece of steak on a white plate…
    nice though…
    but come on…this isn't cooking…
    sides??? OK-ish
Bearnaise…maybe they should learn how to make it…I could teach them…
service nice but very pushy on spending…
rude when you ask for a Chateaubriand 600 g for 2 to say “sorry but we have only 700g…is it ok?”…cheeky
    never again…
I like real food and real creativity in cooking… here it's for people who eat to survive…not to appreciate

and on top of that…it's one of the noisiest place I've been in the UK…good luck for listening and get ready for aspirin in the end…

Shame to waste such amazing decor with that kind of food…

The new Hawksmoor is a fabulous addition to the Hawksmoor chain. It is set in a beautiful period building and the decor is elegant and tasteful. The food was top quality. I had a the smoked salmon starter and the soda bread that came with it was delicious although I could have done with a bit more salmon. The fillet steak was great and better than at the west end restaurant. The chips were highly recommended. Good service and a great meal all in all.
