Malcolm John’s new Putney venture looks set to be a complete winner. Diners make their way past a glistening array of seafood laid out on an icy counter, before arriving at the restaurant proper where dark wood & leather, coupled with plenty of daylight & space, make for a very attractive proposition. A meal might start with just-cooked scallops in hazelnut butter, a scattering of nuts & green beans to add to the texture; alternatives could be platters of fruits de mer, or smoked & potted fish. Next, you might order a good-looking steak or burger, but most customers stick to marine life. The likes of pan-roast skate with samphire, or chilli, soy & ginger fried squid arrive squeaky fresh & perfectly cooked. There are murmurs that service isn’t quite up to scratch: teething trouble, let’s hope.
