The twee handle refers to Howard Godfrey, the Waldorf Palm Court’s bandleader when dancing the black bottom & turkey trot was all the rage back in the 1920s. This chic cocktail lounge is a spiffing new addition to the hotel, although the decor could do with an injection of derring-do (aside from its original dark wood panelling & illuminated marble bar). As you’d expect, the drinks cut a dash: decadent gold-flaked Waldorftini wows at £17 a pop, & the line-up of Champagne cocktails runs from la vie en vert (with Calvados, green tea, vanilla & apple syrup) to la vie en rose (with pink Tanqueray 10). A less camp alternative is maple old fashioned, one of many well-judged classics to savour. Meanwhile, tapas-sized Euro-Asian nibbles from £7.50 make Godfrey’s better than just ‘good’.
