Square Meal Review of SkyLounge at Mint Hotel ?

It’s not the first City bar to boast a view, but this bright, contemporary cocktail bar on the 12th floor of the Mint Hotel offers the chance to be up high & outdoors, with a wide terrace affording alfresco close-ups of the Tower of London & beyond. This is definitely the place to be (weather permitting), particularly as the bar itself can get noisy & cramped. Prosaic burgers, grills & platters are the mainstays of the menu, although drinking comes at suitably elevated prices. Cocktails (around £10) include a textbook old fashioned, as well as the Thames Timeout made with fresh raspberry, basil, Zubrowka vodka & Pessoa liqueur. Beer drinkers should note the potent Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, fizz fans are well served, & the wine list suits most palates & pockets.

A big let down. Despite the good views from the top floor of this new hotel, the almost empty restaurant had no atmosphere (lunch time in this central location: should be packed). Very limited selection in the menu (3 selections for each course). The warm tomato consomme was served in a water glass decorated with 5 peas and two basil leaves and tasted like warm oil. I very rarely leave food, but couldn't manage more than a few mouthfuls of this (once the staff had found me a spoon). Fortunately my fellow diner didn't have this problem as they forgot his consomme altogether. Service continued to be somewhat random; very slow to start then over attentive and breaking in on our conversation. Not offered any side dishes with the main course and the steak onglet arrived rare and overdone on the same plate, with only a few beans and some slimy mushrooms as garnish. Ordered some potatoes – not sure what had been done to these, but hard in the middle, flourly on the outside. Dessert of chocolate creme brulee was rather sickly. No suprrise that bill messed up with water entered as orange juice. Place needs a serious shake up (new chef, new front of house manager).

Very poor. Loads of staff (3 on reception), but although only 4 tables occupied it took them 20 minutes to offer drinks and a further 15 to raise the subject of food. Limited choice of 3 starters and mains. Restaurant is next to a bar which plays very loud music so if you're unlucky enough to be put on a table close to that, shouting is required to have a conversation. We paid for our bottle of overpriced wine
and left. No one bothered to ask why and they even added service!

Service issues urgently need to be addressed. Extremely slow, chaotic service and inexperienced staff. Otherwise a very good venue in a good location.
