Square Meal Review of The Grand Union Wandsworth ?

Grand Union started life in Camden in 2006 & has dragged its youthful (ie. studenty) NW1 spirit along for the ride during its expansion across London. Friday & Saturday are officially the party nights when there’s a late licence & DJs on the decks into the early hours, but the various branches do deals & specials throughout the working week. Fancy burgers, chips & pizzas (Hawaiians, meat feasts – they’re not snobs) are the mainstays of the menus, & there isn’t much over a tenner, although sides may tip your food bill into the teens. Drinks are similarly good value, with house cocktails at £6.50 or a back-to-the-80s £3.50 price tag during happy hour. Vintage decor, leather sofas & a soundtrack of indie, soul & funk will offend no one.

I had my birthday party here last week in the beer garden out the back (having never been there before) and I have to say it was the most fun I've had for a long time! The staff were prompt and really friendly – they even went to the trouble of getting me a birthday card which has never happened anywhere I've been before and I was really impressed with the thought.

We set up a bar tab as it's table service, ordered loads of food and drink and didn't need to leave our area all night!
The music was great and we were the last to leave. My friend has just booked a table there for the football next month and I'm organising a friends birthday for the end of this month. This place is a real find and I plan to make it my new summer spot.

Wolf in Sheeps clothing, I went to the Grand Union about 7 weeks ago for a friends birthday outside in their garden. Huge improvement since the Kings Arms, decor great, garden amazing i was already thinking about my birthday party and wishing it was in a hot month. My friends ordered food and it looked great. SO when my partner and I decided to go watch a movie about 2 weeks ago and were looking for a bite to eat before, we said lets go to the Grand Union.
Most of the tabes were full when we got there, they didnt have the Redordial cider I wanted nor Mageners so ended up with kopperberg. The bar lady although not on purpose knocked my partners beer over onto him so he smelled like a bewery. I calmed him down as it was a mistake, we orderd our food and really it was aweful. I had been on a carb free diet untl that day so was looking so forward to sinking my teeth into that burger bun which says baked daily on the menu. I had the chicken and camenbert burger, the bun was so stale it shattered, wasnt even toasted, I did not eat my burger bun and was so upset as I might as well ordred their bunless burgers, chips, burnt, all broken looked like Mcdonalds chips but Mcdonalds actually are way better. My partners burger was cooked to death that when he cut through the patty it shot off his plate it was so hard. I almost felt like telling the table next to us who were ordering burgers not too.
As its a pay as you go system there, you have already paid for food. It was such a pity as I was hoping to have my party there but definitaly not with what was coming out of that kitchen.

£32 for a beer, burger and chips for 2 that really left us with wishing we had just gone to Mcdonalds.
