Prufrock, a coffee bar & barista training centre founded by former ‘world barista champion’ Gwilym Davies, is a caffeine enthusiast’s heaven. There are examples of coffee-making paraphernalia everywhere you turn at the Leather Lane HQ (tampers, spatulas, flasks & Bunsen burners) – though the outlet at hip Shoreditch boutique, Present, is little more than a bar & a bench. It could be rather intimidating to those who just want a latte & don’t really care how it’s made, but service is friendly enough, & it’s not so ‘achingly hip’ that anyone need feel out of place. Square Mile’s ‘seasonal espresso’ beans are the top shout, while food is mainly of the ‘cake & pastry variety’ – pâté on toast, pastrami & pickle on rye, & chocolate brownies are all good.
