A refurb in late 2010 saw this long-standing Young’s boozer given a much-needed injection of life. Perhaps the new decor (flock wallpaper, assorted lampshades & numerous blackboards) is a little over the top, but there’s no doubting the eagerness of the new management. The food includes such Euro classics as French onion soup, asparagus with poached egg, Aberdeen Angus burger, & coq au vin: all competently sourced & assembled, at pleasing prices. To finish, opt for ice cream in various funky flavours (gin & tonic, say, or Jack Daniels), or rum & raisin cheesecake. Free cooking master classes on Tuesday nights fill up quickly. The beer garden is delightful on a sunny day – especially with a glass of Young’s ale in hand – & occasional barbecues add to the charm.
