Fleet-footed folkies & studious researchers holed up in the hallowed HQ of the English Folk Dance & Song Society can now take a break from obscure ballad-hunting & step-learning at this fresh-faced café. Head downstairs from the majestic 1930s hall & you’ll come upon a suitably folksy little enclave tricked out with pastel-cloths, vintage cake stands & shelves of domestic clutter, plus a blackboard scribbled with affordable delights. Breads, cakes & other sweet goodies are baked throughout the day, but if your thoughts turn to something savoury, the modest kitchen can also dish up chunky wholesome soups, plates of organic pork sausages & lamb pie – plus ethnic nibbles such as tabbouleh for world music renegades. You can also watch as wannabe lords of the dance try out their tricky moves in the adjacent rehearsal rooms.
