Taking over a site that has seen Fishworks & Nachos come & go, the Penny Black is hoping to become a ‘home away from home’ for lovers of cottage pie, toad-in-the-hole, Lancashire hotpot, braised oxtail & other diehard Brit stalwarts. Like the eponymous postage stamp, this place aims to milk the nostalgia for all it’s worth – so expect plenty of bubble & squeak on the side, as well as these-you-have-loved desserts such as Arctic roll, ‘posh’ jelly & ice cream or bananas & custard sprinkled with hundreds & thousands. Produce will be garnered from farmers, growers & suppliers across the UK, & drinkers will have some English wines to sample – along with a global range by the glass or carafe.
This is a rarity. A
100-bin wine list where every listing is available by the glass or half-bottle carafe, with a decent tasting note to match. It isn’t too cheap (this is Chelsea), but the list is welcoming and
helpful. Matthew Clark and Louis Latour dominate, but the upside is Latour’s Echezeaux Grand Cru by the glass.
