Square Meal Review of 34 ?

This ‘fabulously elegant’ Caprice Holdings satellite has moved away from its ‘meaty Scott’s’ shtick and the menu now has far more in common with stablemates such as The Ivy or Le Caprice. Of course, you can still get a fine piece of top-notch Wagyu, USDA Prime or dry-aged Scotch rib-eye from the grill, but you might also consider a Dover sole or loin of tuna flashed over charcoal. Elsewhere, there are clever ideas such as lamb’s sweetbreads with ravigote sauce and purslane, the deliriously rich house special of lobster macaroni with truffle, and sweet treats including a peanut-butter crunch bar. Lunchers might try classy salads or the £27.50 set deal, and there’s a very civilised Sunday brunch too, while the narrow dining room’s burnt-orange banquettes, parquet floors and dinky bar remind one reader of ‘Manhattan meets 1950s Milan’ – especially when live jazz plays in the evening. A great package with ‘excellent service’.

    The Food Judge :: 34. It’s a Caring Formula.

    It’s very much in the Caring style. Plush, great service, expensive and comfortable. It’s a lovely Art Deco fit-out, with decent art on the walls. It oozes comfortable. Forties music was playing at the unseasonably early time that we sat down for dinner. Given that the Forties is my era in so many ways, this made me put on my happy face. No mean feat, given the day I’d had in the office. At the time when normal people would eat, say about 7.30, the Baby Grand in the corner sprang to life, with some jazz classics. I approve of this, because I am not right next to it, as I was last time, when I had to communicate with a client by a combination of sign language and shouting, as I am unable to lip-read. I hope I never go deaf...

    Saying it straight :: 34. It’s a Caring Formula.

    Ask for a round table. You might otherwise have to move three times, like I did on the visit before this one. They favour the run of tables close together style of dining, so that you get to know your neighbour, whether or not you want to. A round table will take you away from all that. A round table like the one shared by B and I, with a lamp in the middle and a cord attached, draped, somewhat bizarrely, across the table. If I’m not wrong (and I often am, ask anyone who knows me) this is the first restaurant in the Caring Group that he has opened on his own. The others in the Caring stable, which includes J Sheekey, Scott’s, The Ivy and Le Caprice, he bought fully formed from Rex Associates, otherwise known as Corbin and King, whose current portfolio includes The Wolseley, Delaunay and Brasserie Zédel. Maybe Mr Caring needed their help to sort out an original name. This is at 34 Grosvenor Square. They must have thought for ages before coming up with that one...

  3. You really can't go wrong with any of the Caprice Group restaurants. Scotts, J Sheekey and the Ivy are all stalwarts that have been in London for many years. Restaurant 34 is the youngest of the siblings, opening in November 2011. The restaurant is a celebrity hotspot and it is the restaurant of choice for stars such as Kate Moss, Katy Perry, Sean Penn and Ellie Goulding. Its not easy to spot in its location just off Grosvenor Square but look out for the large leopard just outside the front door...
