Square Meal Review of The Grazing Goat ?

Out of the same stable as The Thomas Cubitt in Belgravia, this light & airy kid on the block has recently added eight guest rooms, making it a good-to-know-about B&B spot as well as pub/restaurant. All pale wood & oatmeal textiles, the street-level boozer serves an interesting selection of beers, including Meantime’s Union lager, as well as house cocktails, fresh juices & a reasonable choice of wines by the glass. Sunday roasts are popular, & the rest of the time a mix of suits & Portman Village locals populate the bar or slightly more formal upstairs dining room, eating simple but neatly presented dishes such as chicken-liver parfait topped with melting red wine jelly, warmly praised burgers or seared tuna with a smoked tomato sauce. Portions are generous, making it more feasting than grazing.

Have just used this venue for a private hire corporate dinner in the first floor dining room. The night before we ate in a Michelin star restaurant in a nearby hotel and were seriously underwhelmed. Thankfully the GG came to the rescue and also restored my faith in good pub grub! The rustic chic setting was perfect for the CEO's informal team dinner. The menu was varied and delicious, the staff friendly and efficient and the location, nicely tucked away behind bustling Marble Arch. Will definitely use this again and complements to events team who were also easy to work with.

Hired the first floor of the Grazing Goat for a private party which was expertly handled by the management and staff. All my requirements were met, ample staff were on hand to ensure everyone's wine glasses were kept filled and the food (canapes) were delicious. Would highly recommend it as a party/function location.

We held our company Christmas dinner for 45 people at The Grazing Goat in December. The food was excellent, especially when dealing with such a large group and very good value for money. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive throughout the evening. I can not fault The Grazing Goat and we will definitely be returning!

We had a delightful evening with a party 19 friends on Sunday 7th August. Service was excellent! Food was excellent!
Good decor. Really nice place! We had a lot of wine, well priced, which put up the cost for us!! Will certainly return soon.

Went on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch with a friend, midst-shopping trip. It's great that there's somewhere calm, polished and relaxing this close to the vortex that is Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon. It was late (post-lunchtime rush, I imagine) but we got a table and it wasn't uncomfortably packed or loud.

The decor is a bit uniform-gastro-pub-chain but it's done well and it's light, airy and comfortable.

The food is decent gastro-pub fare. The chilli squid starter was crispy and well-flavoured and enough to share between two of us. The steak and red wine pie and the house burger were tasty, filling and well-cooked. There is a good wine list with unusual bottles and lots for those drinking by the glass.

Where it failed – maybe just a bad day (I hope so) is in the service. Despite not being busy, it was difficult to get the attention of the generous number of staff on duty. Irritating but not a disaster initially. Then my friend asked for her coffee to be remade as she'd asked for a short macciato and was given an enormous milky thing in a glass…at which point, it all went a little bit awry. The waiter decided to argue with her about it and told her he thought she should try it before sending it back, ignoring the fact that it wasn't the choice she'd ordered. When we asked for the bill, it took forever and then we could not raise anyone's attention to come take our payment. Three members of staff were standing nearby, chatting and I tried flagging their attention by a louder-than-I'd-have-liked ‘excuse me, can we pay?’, at which point the waitress raised her hand to stop me so that she could finish her conversation with her colleagues. Which she did BEFORE she came over to take our money.

We felt that the bill at just under 80 pounds for 2 mains, 1 shared starter, 2 coffees and a bottle of mid-priced wine wasn't terribly good value. I usually give restaurants a 2nd chance and I will do so for The Grazing Goat but I really hope they sort out the unpleasant service.

Aren't we the lucky ones to have The Grazing Goat virtually on our doorstep? There couldn't be more of a transformation from when it was the Bricklayers Arms pub, gone is the dark, dingy neglected pub, with a surly landlady and a carpet that your feet stuck to, and in its place is a light really well fitted out gastropub, with wooden floors and friendly staff – who actually talk to the customers. The owners have literally ripped out the old and replaced it with new and there is now one huge open space on the ground floor with tables you can eat or just drink at, a bar with plenty of stools, and some comfy chairs in front of the fire to sink in to.

A great menu with the usual suspects… Beer battered fish and chips with mushy peas, steak pie and a fabulous burger, there is also a good selection of starters which change frequently depending on what is in season.

It has a great atmosphere, mainly due to the fixtures and fittings and well thought out lighting which all help to give a cosy feel. They also have full length doors which will obviously be opened in the summer and will no doubt make the GG a perfect venue on a sunny day.

There is also a first floor bar and restaurant.
