Square Meal Review of Grand Imperial ?

This ‘very posh’ Chinese at Victoria station’s Grosvenor hotel certainly lives up to its regal moniker, with lavish interiors designed according to the principles of feng shui (think Victorian coved ceilings meet ornate calligraphy screens). The kitchen majors in Hong Kong/Cantonese cuisine, with seafood showing up strongly in the shape of jellyfish with umami-rich XO sauce, eel baked in pastry or wok-fried king prawns with soy. Otherwise, expect a lively run from hot & sour soup to stir-fried duck with cashews – plus some surprising crossovers such as ‘magnificent’ cod with foie gras or crème brûlée with green tea. A big contingent of dim sum satisfies the lunchtime crowd, set menus offer an appetising snapshot of the cuisine, & the Grand package also includes oriental high teas & Chinese-themed cocktails.

We went to Grand Imperial last week for a special dinner and we were very pleased with the overall meal and hospitality there. Its actually inside the Grosvenor which is being refurbished and looks amazing!

Before our meal we had a cocktail at the bar, the barman was charming and suggested a couple of his favourites including the ‘Gamble’ which has a new thing called boba in it. The jazz pianist was great- very romantic.

We had a selection of recommended chef's favourites including the signature roast duck for our main which is by far the best Ive eaten and dim sum – the prawns tossed in wasabi mayo were to die for. For dessert we tried the green tea brulee – a nice alternative to cake.

We went for dinner on a tues evening and had the 15 set menu for 2 courses. The service was really excellent and the decor is lovely inside. However the food wasn't great.

The starters of dim sum and someone were good if uneventful. However the main courses- beef in sauce and sweet and sour tofu with fruit were really average and tiny portions- I was still really hungry afterwards. Beware- tea costs £4.00 per person and the prices don't include vat!

Enjoyed a great meal at the Grand Imperial last week as a birthday suprise for my girlfriend, she loves Chinese food so i thouight i would give it a try. The service was really friendly and made you feel very relaxed, the food was brilliant and if you come here there are 2 dishes you have to try; the Roasted Peking Duck, as it is the best in London and the Creme Brulee with Green Tea as I havent seen this anywhere else and it was amazing. If this restaurant can continue like this then i would definately recommend it to others.

Well what a disappointment. I took some friends last night to the Grand Imperial as it was Chinese New Year. We had had drinks at the bar the week before and it certainly looked like it had promise. Unfortunately there were no celebrations to talk of except a very expensive New Year cocktail and there was absolutely no atmosphere in this very large space. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet. We all selected a Chef's recommended menu three at £40 and one at £35. The food was just okay the dim sum was tasty but two pieces was ridiculous as was the portion of duck that came with it, the large prawn was also disappointing lacking flavour, the spinach soup with scallop was nice but just one scallop! And the noodles with mushrooms were well noodles with mushrooms but hardly a fine dining experience. The Creme Brulee with Geen Tea was the surprise of the evening, absolutely delightful. The service was also very disappointing in one instance three of us had been served our middle course and we had to wait at least five minutes for the final dish to arrive. At these prices this is poor service. Also the food could have been hotter. The overall service was very patchy and not up to the standard I would expect from a restaurant that is clearly pitching itself at the higher end of the market. I really do think this restaurant will struggle unless it get's its act together. The final bill for four was just under £300 with three bottles of wine at sub £30.00. For the overall experience this was too much money and I thought the set menus that we chose were terrible value. Hakkasan has nothing to fear in fact with Hakkasan opening in Mayfair the Grand Imperial will have to up its game as this restaurant is large and will need a great reputation to fill it! PW

The decoration is actually quite chic but with elements of classic victorian. One of the best ceiling i have seen in a restaurant. Nice drinks menu with their own cocktail creations. Food were elegantly served. Service was prompt and attentive. Food wise, it was really good. They have actually blend in Cantonese food with European style. The Foie Gras with Cod Fish was just magnificent. Love the Grilled lamb steak. Really juicy marinated with spices. I went there for a business dinner and it fits the occasion. A restaurant with great potential .

Grand chinese restaurant, with very high ceilings and a formal feel.
    Part of the adjacent hotel.
Very attentive service, they really look after you, and excellent food. Nicely decorated, besides the inevitable fish tank.
Reasonably priced for lunch, dinner presumably quite expensive.
I had hot & sour soup and mixed roast meat (pork belly & duck) which was all very very good and presented in a modern way.
    Would definately go there again.
