What was once a gloomy hotel bar has been transformed into a pleasant if unremarkable brasserie as part of the Grosvenor’s major refurb. Dark-wood wall panels & shiny maroon chesterfields make for a clubby atmosphere, which is lifted by bright paintings of chilled-out commuters – a nod to the building’s original status as one of the great railway hotels. The menu meets basic requirements with a range of steaks, fish & chips, Caesar salads & the like – although pigeon with pickled morels & watercress emulsion hints at expertise in the kitchen. Ginger pannacotta with gingerbread & pear jelly makes a pleasant finale, otherwise retire to the sedate lounge next door for a digestif. Fixed-price lunches come in at £16.95/20.95 for two/three courses, though house wine is a steep £20.
