Square Meal Review of The Prince ?

Signs outside asking you to keep the noise down in the evenings give a good indication of the vibe at this smart locals’ pub, tucked away in a residential road. There’s no rowdiness, mind; The Prince is civilised, peaceful & pleasant. Attractions include a regular film night, the monthly ‘cheese & pineapple club’ comedy line-up, board games (chess, backgammon, Guess Who?) &, of course, the food. A modern Euro menu with hints of the Med (calamari with paprika & chilli mayo; pork belly with dauphinoise potatoes, apple velouté, veg & port jus) also features pies baked to order, steaks from the grill & homemade burgers by size – the Princess (4oz), Prince (8oz) & King (two 8oz patties). There’s also a decent wine list, & notable beers (Doom Bar, Leffe, Hoegaarden, Staropramen) & ciders (Weston’s, Aspall, Thatchers).

The Prince is our local and we go there regularly. It's off Church St so you need to know about it to find it but it rivals lots of the restaurants on Church St and is worth the 5 minute walk south. It's family friendly, has a great atmosphere – a stylish gastro pub with old wooden tables, light and airy in summer but also cozy in winter. There are 2 TVs but they are small and not intrusive and useful when there are big sporting events to follow! You can eat in the main bar or in a separate area away from the bar and there are 2 outside spaces. The burgers are delicious and come in a number of sizes. There is always a good selection of starters like whitebait, pate with toast, interesting salads and for mains the theme is good wholesome food in pretty decent portions. Risotto is always done well, there are special pastas, always a chicken dish, usually something like a lamb shank and a steak and the chips are delicious. The wine list is large and good value. You can rent out the separate eating area for parties and there is a larger space above the pub. we love The Prince and keep going back.
