This unassuming pub in leafy Barnsbury calls itself a ‘great British boozer’. Hence, it has barbecues on Gunners’ match days, beer mats displayed on the beams, & bags of crisps nailed up behind the bar. But, this being N1, it also has wooden floors, panelling & a tasteful pale-blue coat of paint. The menu, though unsure of its geographical allegiances, lists refined temptations such as roast tomato & basil soup with pesto & Parmesan crisp, glazed pig’s cheeks with thyme & bacon-scented cabbage, & baked Vacherin. A brief but accomplished wine list includes choices by the 500ml carafe, as well as by the glass or bottle. The owners are serious about The Barnsbury’s boozer status, as confirmed by their Cask Marque accreditation. Amiable staff will happily help you with the selection of ales on the six hand pumps.
