Yes, The Hope has undergone the obligatory gastro-refurbishment, yet the process has simply amplified its good looks – it remains a proper pub. The location, next to stellar restaurant Chez Bruce, might seem daunting, but you’ll find a complementary (rather than competing) service here. After a walk on the common with the dog, this is where to pop by for a glass of wine or ale. There’s a splendid choice of around 20 beers & ciders on tap. Alternatively, you could relax while someone barbecues dinner or prepares haddock & chips & a smoked chicken salad (or perhaps one of the tempting bar snacks would suffice). There’s plentiful seating outside, with views of the common opposite; inside, certainly during the day, the space is flooded with light from the plentiful windows.
