An old-fashioned pub that has been spruced up, The Devonshire remains a boozer through & through. The bar, with its smart leather sofas & big chandeliers, has the feel of pubs of old, with beers such as Young’s Bitter & Bombardier on tap. A pretty back garden gives respite from the busy A24 at the front. There’s a smart dining area with a promising menu, too, but this is not a gastropub & the emphasis is on drinkers. To avoid gastronomic disappointment, stick to the likes of fish & chips, steaks, & ribs from the barbecue (when available), rather than veer towards marinated sardines or seafood tian. A decent wine list holds plenty of choice under £20, most served by the glass as well as the bottle.
