Square Meal Review of Dego Wine Bar & Restaurant ?

Part wine ‘dég-ustation’ room, part ‘o-steria’(hence the name), Degò opened quietly in 2010 & has remained resolutely under the radar ever since. A pity, because those who do venture into this sleek black & red basement room are enthusiastic about the full-flavoured cooking & impressive wine list. ‘Imaginatively created antipasti’, comforting aubergine parmigiana & beef tortellini served al dente in a sage & butter sauce are elevated from their trattoria origins, while secondi such as parcel-steamed sea bass with tomatoes, capers & beans are equally well judged. Upstairs is home to the dégustation bar, where sample-sized glasses from the regional Italian wine list are offered alongside cheeses & cured meats. Staff are professional, efficient & knowledgeable, while the Oxford Circus location & good-value lunch menu (£12.50) make it a handy catch-up spot.

Degò was great. Even though it was full the atmosphere was very cosy and the service friendly. The food fresh and delicious. Highly recommended.

Never have I been more minded to write a review of a restaurant than for this one which distinguishes itself by its ghastly food, lack lustre atmosphere and outrageously high prices. The only redeeming features are its pleasant staff and exceptionally good list of north Italian wines.

I ordered salmon carpaccio which comprised two small strips of indistinguishable salmon fashioned into the shape of a flower, a small bowl of mushy broccoli and a spoonful of goop passing for yoghurt. My friend had ‘bigoli’ (a Vicenza ‘home-made’ pasta which was very far from home i.e. it had not been made in house) with a microwaved duck ragú. This was followed by sea bass with more soggy broccoli and a ‘caramel’ sauce which tasted of condensed milk with melted toffees. My secondo was micowaved rabbit with a congealed sauce that tasted more of Bisto than anything I have had in Italian, much less northern Italy which is where the cook and staff come from.

They are basically too ambitious and must think London customers are ignorant, little-travelled soaks who are unable to distinguish between excellent Italian food and pretentious ‘nouvel nothing’. How wrong they are!

Go for the food, stay for the wine…

Hearty Italian cuisine is so ubiquitous in London that I’m not sure we really know what it is anymore. And at some points during my meal I think Dego has become confused too.
The modren Italian defies all expectations. Not one aspect of the night failed to surprise me in some way or other. It is laid out more like a chic American diner than a traditional Italian. Customers are seated in rectangular booths with red and black leather, below lamps that pick you out like a soloist in concert.
It is determinedly modern, proven by the square toilet bowls and lack of zeros at the end of the wine prices. After a refreshing gin aperitif we ordered glasses of Verdiccio Castelli, which costs precisely £22.5 per bottle. Its complicated texture saved my overly salty beef roulade starter, which needed more dressing to balance it.
For my main I ordered what turned out to be a duck bolognese. I had expected something a little more subtle, and the menu needs to be more precise. But fortunately I was delighted by the hearty flavours that complemented the meat, which was lighter than duck has any right to be. However, the wine chosen by our helpful sommelier – a gewürztraminer from the Alto-Adige region of Italy – stole the show. Alto-Adige is a German-speaking region of northern Italy, which may explain the heavy, hop-like aroma and finish of the wine that matched beautifully with the duck mince.
I had to wait for the pudding for the food to amaze me. Again, the misleading menu undersold my chocolate, ginger and meringue desert. It was actually a pyramid of set chocolate filled with gooey meringue and caramel bathing in a shockingly spiced ginger sauce that was unique and delicious.
This could not save me from being slightly underwhelmed with the food, even if the prices were reasonable for the portion sizes and quality of ingredients. But the menu has enough on it to make every visit different, and there are sure to be more treasures in there. You should go for the food, but you’ll probably go back for the wine.

We had the quick pre theatre meal and the service was prompt and efficient. My potatoes and leak soup was smooth and tasty and fetuccine with bufalo mozzarella was delicious too. Overall a good choice for supper before a night at Palladium.

I had a fantastic experience in Dego' Restaurant. The food was really tasty, particularly the t-bone steak, which was possibly one of the nicest things I have ever eaten! We also had antipasti, which were very imaginatively created, well prepared and tasted absolutely delicious. I found the atmosphere to be relaxed and friendly and the surroundings to be well designed epecially the mosaic leather and the wine cellar behind the cocktail bar. This is the first time I have been, but I would definitely go back and try the wine bar upstairs.
