A deliberately casual eatery at the plush Park Plaza hotel, Ichi serves a compact menu of quality sushi, sashimi & sakés. A virtual fish tank is illuminated behind the counter, where lone diners can always find a perch. Apart from chef’s specials, which may feature seared tuna with jalapeños or a refreshing seaweed salad with sesame dressing, the menu is succinct & conservative with a few delightful touches. Fatty tuna belly (toro) & oily yellowtail (hamachi) are two highlights, though the marinated salmon belly roll is worth a gander. Asahi beer is fine for a casual sip, but saké is the connoisseur’s choice: look for the junmai ginjo variety made with highly polished rice, or the milky, unfiltered nigori version. One tip – ask for the ‘Big Ben table’ when booking (self-explanatory, really).
