Most people in Balham prefer to eat their Chinese or Japanese dinners at home, & to be honest, takeaways are probably Bento’s forte. The huge canteen-style restaurant, decked out with posters & the odd piece of Asian fabric, isn’t the most comfortable or welcoming of venues – despite perfectly willing service. The choice of drinks leaves something to be desired too, so it’s unsurprising the place is often under-subscribed. The food, however, is rather better than expected, encompassing a selection of all-time Asian greats such as tom yum or coconut soups, king prawns with kung po or oyster sauce, aromatic duck, sushi & teriyaki.
