Gallic by name, but global in outlook, London’s Auberge group does populist bistro cooking with an international twist. A typical meal might begin with pâté de campagne or moules marinière & finish over rich mousse au chocolat, but in between, it could easily take in a burger, mushroom risotto or ‘cabillaud frites’ (fish & chips by another name) as well as classic beef bourguignon or entrecôte grillée. You’ll find a few French names on the wine list, but quaffable New World pours (from £13.95) & mainstream lagers (Becks Vier, Stella etc) tend to be the order of the day. The food may not be ‘out of this world’, but it’s inexpensive & served in comfortable, contemporary surroundings by friendly staff. A popular choice for private functions.
