After five years of operation, this odd but likeable pub has been smartened up & had a pizza oven installed. Happily, the slightly off-the-wall quirkiness of The Clarence (named after the owner’s dog; there are statues & pictures of him all over) has survived the refurbishment. Staff obviously care about their beers – there are in-depth tasting notes on the pumps for all to read, & a row of bottles from around the world, as well as plenty of wine by glass & bottle. The kitchen makes full use of its new oven, but food still has a pleasingly homely flavour. Expect halloumi cheese sticks with cauliflower dip, & foot-long hot dogs with chorizo chilli, alongside eccentrically topped pizzas (rosemary potatoes, red onion, Stilton & truffle oil: no kidding).
