Tsuru is rapidly gaining a cult following for its katsu curry – ‘the most delicious I’ve had outside of Nippon’, gushes one fan – & its unmissable version of katsu sando, featuring breaded pork or chicken on authentically pappy white bread with cabbage, mayo & tonkatsu sauce. Offering good quality, sustainable sushi on a budget, however, is really what this creative wee group of Japanese restaurants is all about, & its London sites do a brisk lunchtime trade in boxes & sets, with side orders of chilli-spiked edamame, cucumber & wakame salad or miso soup. Things get more exciting in the evening when gyoza, takoyaki (octopus balls) & premium sushi, plus whiskies & saké are added to the offering.
