The occasional rumble of passing trains is an endearing quirk rather than an annoyance, especially as the bare brick arches of Platform’s upstairs dining room offer a romantic hat-tip to station architecture. A commendable farm-to-table ethos is apparent in the frequently changing menu, although staff ‘don’t bombard you with information’. Sustainable fish & British ingredients go into crowd-pleasers such as handpicked Cornish crab with crème fraîche or slow-roasted Middle White pork cheeks with gnocchi. Meanwhile, local workers fill up on moreish snacks (Scotch eggs, crackling, & apple sauce) in the ground-floor bar, while downing local brews such as Meantime Helles or sipping cocktail concoctions shaken with homemade raspberry vodka & Southern Comfort. Service is genuinely friendly & courteous – ‘a rare find these days’, says one reader.
