Situated on a residential street in the villagey area south of Notting Hill Gate, The Hillgate is the kind of convivial meeting place that should be in every neighbourhood. Once a slightly rowdy sports pub, it has been transformed into a bushy-tailed, born-again boozer that the locals are justifiably proud to have in their midst. The short menu is in the comfort food mould, so expect Stilton-topped burgers, charcuterie plates & macaroni cheese alongside the likes of roast corn-fed chicken with Puy lentils. Although a few tables are reserved for diners, drinkers feel right at home here with a choice of three real ales & an accessible wine list. Friday & Saturday evenings draw crowds of late-twentysomethings, while Saturday brunch & Sunday roasts attract families & lazy weekenders.
