Homely Mien Tay only opened on the Pho Mile in 2008, but it quickly became known as the discerning foodie’s budget Vietnamese. Its culinary heart lies in the home cooking & intense flavours of Vietnam’s south-west. Deep-fried bream with ginger was authentically crunchy, while the fearsome heat of dry spicy beef with cooling mango couldn’t possibly have been tamed for western palates. Dried spicy beef & green papaya, goat with lemongrass & chilli, & the hotpot for two are other hot tips. One for food lovers, though perhaps not the fash pack who won’t get past the faux rattan, tatty green paint & plastic wisteria. Mien Tay struggles on busy nights when things get noisy; staff can get flustered & the reservation system sometimes goes to pot. Still, you’ll ‘leave shaking your head as to how you got such good food for such a small spend’. (Clue: it’s BYO.)
