When new owners arrived at this handsome backstreet gastropub in 2010, they installed their vintage beer-can collection in glass cabinets that also provide the lighting for the large dining room. Relax in the sunny patio garden in summer, or cosy up by the open fireplaces when it’s cold, & tuck into a menu that’s pitched to please. You’ll find a homemade burger, rib-eye steak & sausages with champ & gravy, but the kitchen can also knock up poached Burford brown eggs with hot smoked salmon, brioche & hollandaise, or Somerset-cider fish stew with mussels, clams & aïoli. Sundays are popular for brunches of bloody Mary & kedgeree, or a pint of Doom Bar with punchy British cheeses. Friday & Saturday nights are spent stoking up the next day’s sore head to an eclectic soundtrack, courtesy of local DJs.
