Square Meal Review of Wallace & Co ?

Gregg Wallace was well-known as a fruit & veg man before he was on telly. His fresh produce from Secretts Farm in Surrey is rightly hailed as some of the best local produce available for the London restaurant trade, & this café-deli is purportedly a showcase for it. Expect beautiful salads, lovely tomatoes, impeccable vegetables & excellent bread in a gorgeous, light-filled atrium. However, it’s likely Wallace would be horrified if he ate here. Food is often inaccurately cooked & much of it comes out of the kitchen cold, delivered in ‘mean portions’. What’s more, service tends to be slow whether staff are busy (which is rare) or not. The MasterChef isn’t proving himself a master restaurateur; it may be time for him to go back to his day job.

I went there first one afternoon. There was not a soul in the place, but when I tried to sit at the back, the nicest part, I was told that was reserved for people eating lunch. 75 empty seats but I cannot sit there. Ordered tea and a bun – tea outstanding, bun good. Manager was sitting at a table near me occasionally shouting instructions at waiting staff, who clearly had no respect for him and his manner. Utterly inappropriate behaviour in front of customers. Overall, a nice room with bad service and little idea of what they were doing. I returned for breakfast – not bad, not that good, coffee very, very poor. Lacks atmosphere. Silly objects on walls and shelves.

It was my first time to having brunch at this restaurant and I have to admit my overall experience was great. I was going for a special occasion and wanted to surprise my partner with flowers. So I called and spoke to the manager who very kindly, as it is not part of their service, offered to pick some up on the way into the restaurant. Sure enough when we arrived we were taken to our table and much to my partners delight there was a beautiful bouquet sitting on the table. Couldn't have asked for a better result. The actual restaurant is really nice and has a lovely mezzanine part at the back which is bright and very green. Food was as expected and didn't cost the earth. Definitely will go back.

A while back we wenty for brunch at Wallace & Co, lovely setting with a nice big atrium feel, big windows perfect for a wintery day as it was very light but warm inside. We got there at 11am and even though they were not really busy it seemed the staff were barely managing to get to everyone. We waited 15min before someone came to take our order, once that had been done things moved a bit quicker and we noticed some more staff and another manger had arrived so from there onwards I think it was fine. But they clearly didn't have a full staff before 11am. I had the Eggs Benedict and my other half had as usual the full english brekfast. We seem to have the same thing everytime we go out, food was good -bacon was lovely. I was still a bit peckish after my benedict where at another establishment ( Bill's) I frequent am never left not full. Bills though in defence is a bigger operation and can't really compare too much. We will go back as it is local too us but I think in the current market you need to be wow, not just rolling along.
