With most of its seating on pavement tables overlooking James Street, it’s possible to eat at the original Massis without ever stepping inside. But if the weather is too inclement even for the awnings & heat lamps, you can retreat to a utilitarian dining room that’s a world away from the relatively chi-chi new branch at Paddington Basin. Massis is all about straightforward Lebanese food, so don’t fight the urge to call forth a crowded table of stuffed vine leaves, dips & labneh, followed by lamb or chicken grills whose billowing smoky aromas often waft out onto the street. Bargain wraps might enclose spicy lamb sausages or falafel, & there’s rice pudding to finish, but don’t expect much in the way of freebies – not even gratis pickles & sweetmeats.
