By any measure, the arty, post-punk, clubby Mark’s Bar in the basement at Hix is world class; hence, the high-end clientele some of whom might actually be able to afford the luxuries touted in the FT’s How To Spend It. Put on your glad rags & sample an understated classic such as hanky panky or Criterion milk punch; alternatively, make a style statement with matador (Ocho Reposado Tequila, dry vermouth & orange Curaçao) or the avenue (Four Roses bourbon, Somerset cider brandy, grenadine, passion fruit nectar & orange blossom water). There are also some tasty nostalgic treats such as Martinican vermouth cocktail, which was a rummy fin-de-siècle smash at Fouquet’s in Paris. To soak up the booze, asparagus fondue, smoked-salmon croquettes & pork crackling appear on the list of snacks (from £3.25) at this debut-de-siècle London triumph.
