A nationwide chain of easy-going bars, the Slug & Lettuce is a bargain-hunter’s delight. The menu of modern pub grub isn’t going to win any prizes, nor will the unchallenging wine list, but with mains starting at £5.95 & a small glass of house plonk from as little as £2.50, it’s certainly easy on the wallet. Factor in young, personable staff & it’s no wonder that these bars are often thronging with twentysomethings out for a good time. Food kicks off with cooked breakfasts before noon, making way for snacks & sharing plates designed to soak up the booze; there are big, full-fat platefuls too in the fulsome shape of ribs, pies, burgers & pasta. Drinks focus on wine, mainstream cocktails & shots – from a Jäger-bomb sunk into a glass of Red Bull, to a line-up of tequila for sharing.
