Square Meal Review of The Orange ?

Part of a budding group that includes the nearby Thomas Cubitt, The Orange’s cultured good looks had the Pimlico locals swooning in appreciation when it opened in 2009. The pitch-perfect interior design combines distressed wood, olive paintwork & prints to create a ‘mishmash of French country kitchen meets Arts & Crafts’, & the eclectic menu follows suit with salads, pizzas & modern European dishes ranging from beetroot, fig & goats’ cheese tart to slow-cooked veal shin with polenta – although a dazzling orange & caramel cheesecake with salted caramel ice cream sealed it for one reader. Meantime Helles is the pick of the pints, & the wine list has an Old World bias. Set over four floors, the whole package extends to boutique bedrooms & nooks for private dining.

A wonderful place for all occasion. I was at a wedding reception in the upstairs dining room and it was perfection! Such a lovely space and the most delicious food. Having been many times before, I can say that I have never had a bad meal there. Friendly staff and always a great atmosphere The hotel rooms there (there are 4) are also great and very comfortable.

    Great staff, attentive and friendly!

One of our waiters answered all our questions, and went out of his way to find information such as where the meat was source from, despite the place being very busy.

    Food was absolutely superb!

I had wild boar, which is really unusual to find in England, and it was cooked to perfection and tasted great. Adding chorizo was nice twist from traditional recipes.

I'm definitely going to visit The Orange again

I just organised a cocktail party for 25 people in the music room at the Orange. We all had a wonderful time. The room is located on the first floor, has large windows and a small terrace in the back, which was perfect to enjoy the wonderful weather. The canapés were delicious and the presentation exquisite. The staff was very efficient and flexible. I would definitely organised more events there. Many Thanks to the team at the Orange for making the event stress free.

The Orange is a new favourite of mine! I have been here several times before for glasses of wine with the girls but never before for food. That is until I was in the area with a friend feeling suddenly peckish. Being fairly early they managed to seat us immediately. We found the service to be polite, friendly and efficient.

The food was delicious, I ordered the grilled salmon with broad beans, peas and bacon with horseradish sauce. It was divine and the flavours worked wonderfully together. The salmon was perfectly cooked and I can report its one of the tastiest meals I have had in a long time. My fellow diner was also thoroughly impressed and the phrase ‘we have to come here again’ did pop up once or twice. We shared the dessert of treacle pudding, rhubarb compote and rhubarb ice cream and it was delicious. All the food has a very rustic homemade feel to it and the ice cream especially tasted like the lovely clotted cream type that the west country (my second home) is famous for!

Unusually for myself, I didn't order wine however having had a quick peek at the wine list I could see a tempting array of different wines all at reasonable prices.

The restaurant became busier and the atmosphere more bustling as the evening drew in, I can see this would be a fabulous place for after work drinks and a bite to eat.

Overall I would say this is great food, in a great place without being too purse draining!

The Orange is very nice and I can definitely recommend it.

Online booking is very simple and you get a conformation e-mail and a call on the day which makes the process simple; but it does get booked up quickly for peak times so either book a few days ahead or you'll end up going early or late.

The room has that carefully distressed look where all the woodwork looks a bit battered and all the chairs, glasses etc don't match – but you know someone has spent many hours making sure that they don't. The overall impression is warm and welcoming – like dinner at a friends house and the window boxes full of greenery are a lovely touch.

Service was a little bit mixed – swift, perfectly friendly and polite, but employing staff who don't always speak brilliant English is a bit of a drawback, with some confusion between steak and skate, though we got there in the end. I did also get a bill that included all the items we had, plus a drink that we didn't, though when I queried this it was removed instantly without quibbling.

Atmosphere was good – though it gets quite noisy when full. We went quite early whilst it was quiet, but by the time we left the noise levels had rapidly increased, though not to the point that they were unpleasant or in any way spoilt a good evening.

Food is very good: I started with pea soup with mint and pecorino gnocchi – a really large bowl full with a lovely garden fresh taste and properly hot (something many restaurants struggle with), this was followed by breast of chicken, white beans and chorizo with a side order of chips – it was just a bit bland, nothing wrong with it but nothing exciting, though lovely, properly hand cut, chips. This was followed by a distinct high point – orange caramel cheesecake with sea salt caramel ice cream – one of the best desserts I've ever had; a generous sized portion with a rich creamy cheesecake, candied orange and exceptional ice cream.

The bill came to £165 for 3 people with 3 courses, one bottle of wine, one bottle of water and a couple of extra glasses of wine – that’s good value.

Will I return – yes, definitely.

I had a 21st birthday dinner for forty at The Orange. We got the exclusive use of the first floor with a reasonable minimum spend.
Staff were very pleasant on guests arrival and throughout the evening. They were also flexible with us ordering a fair bit later than anticipated. We didn't have to wait long at all for food, and given that forty people were catered for in one sitting, the quality was very high. The two house bottles of wine were not particularly cheap but they were very good.
There was a great calm but buzzy atmosphere and I would recommend The Orange as a great venue for a sit-down birthday dinner party.

Very disappointing Saturday lunch – my main course of veal ( the most expensive dish at £16.50) was thin dry and tasteless and the topping of spinach in bechamel was similarly overcooked and tasteless, under different circumstances I would have sent it back and asked for something else. My companion said his steak and chips (also £16.50) was good. With some reservation I decided to try a glass of Hungarian Pinot Grigio hoping that in an establishment serving quality food, it would be good, but it was barely passable. Pleasant decor is a mish mash of French country kitchen meets Arts & Crafts – stripped wooden tables and chairs etc . but the acoustics are dreadful, so don't go there if you want to have a conversation without shouting. There are upstairs and downstairs restaurant spaces too and it has to be said that the more basic salads and pizza dishes looked much better.

The Orange forms part of the group which brought us The Thomas Cubbitt and The Pantechnicon Rooms. Having been a regular patron of the other two, i was rather excited to see what The Orange had to offer. Upon approaching the venue its clear to see that already The Orange is making itself at home. Crowds are forming around the outside seating area and everybody is smiling.
Downstairs you find the no reservations casual dining area, where-as upstairs is a more formal reservable dining room. We opted for the downstairs area which seemed buzzy and ideal for people spotting. We were a table of 7 but staff were more than accommodating in trying to seat us. We were, however, being picky with our table so decided to have some drinks at the bar until our chosen spots became free. The bar is busy but service is attentive and soon enough we were stood at the bar with a drink firmly in hand.
Less than 10 minutes and the staff had a nice table for us, which we were happy with. The menu offers a real variety from pies and salads to stews and steaks, but the real winner here is the wood fire oven pizza. Being such a large group we ordered a selection of starters and mains and practically all of it was met with mmms and ahhs. Some dishes (pizza and pie) better than others (the chicken and chorizo stew- slightly bland) but most are lip smackingly delicious. Even the desserts are good. A favourite was the rice pudding with stewed fruits and jam. So well done and finished off perfectly having been baked.
The wine list was fair but not so diverse. We merried ourselves with bottles of prossecco. Tap water, if requested was brought over and it was a nice touch that they brought it in country style flip lid green bottles.
Overall this is an excellent neighbourhood gastro which wont have any problems in the popularity stakes.

A gastropub newcomer to Pimlico – brave, given the not so far Botanist and the long-standing Ebury. However, in our books, The Orange has made a superb start. Very friendly and helpful bar staff – wooden floors and decor work well – its a shame however that they do not have more space in the bar area. A “smart” grown up menu (surprising for a pub … but somehow it works) which changes on a regular basis. Recommend the ham and cornichon terrine from the bar menu and a very good value crisp prosecco.

Ok – Where do you start when everything goes beyond perfection?? :-)
I can't remember the last time i ever gave a venue a perfect ten but the Orange gets it in every category!

Firstly the Sunday Roasts! My mouth is watering as i write this! All i can say is get down there on a Sunday and try it! My friends and i have the Orange in our diaries every Sunday! This is my favorite day of the week! Glorious roast, drinks and great mates!

If week days are more your thing, definitely pop down! The menu is out of control with sensational meals! My trouble is trying to choose! My friends are always prodding me, telling me to hurry up and choose my main! Oh its so hard! :-)

The service cannot be faulted! Smart friendly young people! Always smiling and always happy to help! Well educated and can assist you with any queries regarding the menu!

The interior is lush! its so classy yet so comfy! Does that make sense? :-) Anyway what im trying to say is you can happily spend an entire day in there! You'll never want to leave!

The crowd is always great too! Good looking well mannered and friendly! Like me really! :-) But the best thing is you don't have to spend an arm and a leg! You definitely get your value for money!

So with no more to say – go down there yourself and try it! You will not regret it! ENJOY! :-)

We had dinner at the restaurant last night for the first time, and loved it. The food was great, and we were particularly impressed by the service.

Due to, um, administrative errors, we hadn't booked. I'd rung earlier in the afternoon to ensure that the chefs could sort non-dairy dishes, and was told that we'd probably wait for about 10-15min if we turned up at 7:30. Having looked at the menu, I was really enthusiastic about eating there and so we figured we'd hope for the best. When we arrived, the woman handling the downstairs dining area said, very apologetically, that it would actually be about 30min or so. She sent us upstairs to the area with the sofas, and told them to expect us. We were welcomed when we got upstairs, and then had a drink in very comfortable and not too loud surroundings. The very kind staff gave us updates on our table, always with a smile. The dinner itself was great (and the non-dairy was, of course, not a problem). The food was plentiful and delicious.

Next time we'll remember to book, just because it does seem a lot quieter upstairs, but all in all the four of us were really impressed

Finally finally finally !!! I was so close to giving up the fact that I would never find a decent Sunday roast in the centre of London and would have to resort to cooking one myself. However, after a tip off from a friend, four of us went to The Orange for lunch on Sunday. To be fair, one can find a good Sunday set lunch, especially at the likes of York and Albany and Corrigan's Mayfair, but I am not always up for a three course meal for lunch.

Housed in beautiful Victorian building on the corner of Pimlico Road, opposite Daylesford Organic, the Orange has been beautifully decorate in a vintage French theme but it works well for a pub and gives it a warm feel. On Sunday the place was decked out with young glam families and couples relaxing over a glass of something and the papers.

There is a bar on the ground floor and a small restaurant, with the rest of the dining being done upstairs. We hadn't booked and it was busy. Not a problem, the manager said it would be a 30 minute wait and we could go downstairs to the basement bar to grab a drink and seat. About 10 minutes later we were seated at out table and admiring the menu in the upstairs restaurant.

A vast selection of mediterranean dishes and British dishes. Three of us opted for the rib of roast beef with all the trimmings and the fourth had half a roast chicken. I can honestly say, and so could the other two, that I have never seen a bit of beef so large on a plate. Pink in the middle and fantastically soft, this beef was some of the best I have had for a while. Along with the fact you get a lovely homemade yorkshire pub, roast potatoes and loads of veg, at £18.50 this was a superb value plate of food.

House wine starts at £16.00 a bottle and there is a good limited size wine list. Service was friendly and informal in the way one likes on a Sunday afternoon.

One of the best, if not the best, Sunday lunches I have had for a long time in a restaurant. I am returning for dinner in a few weeks and I only hope it lives up to the last time.

What a find! Really cozy, recently refurbed and stylishly done. We enjoyed an excellent evening here within the first week of its re-opening and the food and service were so homely and warm. All portions are very generously sized and we liked the option of ordering a main with a variety of sides, reasonably and fairly priced too. The meatballs starter were very tatsy, the cod main course was beautifully presented and a very healthy piece of fish and my half chicken was so moist and packed with flavour. All in all a very well priced, up market establishment which is definitely a notch above a gastro pub without the formality of restaurant dining. We'll be back but it will most certainly become *very* popular.
