Square Meal Review of Pétrus ?

‘Affordable luxury’ was the stated aim when Gordon Ramsay reopened ‘ultra-discreet’ Pétrus a stone’s throw from its original location in The Berkeley hotel, & he’s got it spot on. GR’s deputy, Sean Burbridge, dishes up food that people really want to eat, & prices are not to be sniffed at in Belgravia (three courses for £65 is top whack). For this price, you might sample juicy scallops with sweet cauliflower purée, piquant anchovies & capers followed by a square of perfectly cooked pork belly topped with a sheet of gorgeous crackling, with dessert delivering super-smooth hazelnut & chocolate parfait overlaid with nuggets of crunchy praline. Spot-on service is quietly assured & unfailingly warm to all & sundry, while the cylindrical wine cellar displays special bottles for all occasions. The whole experience is embellished with nifty extras, as well as little treats to take home. Deservedly popular.

The food was very good – innovative, tasty and very well presented. The wine list (along with the transparent, circular cellar) was impressive, though the prices appear to be quite elevated.

What marred our experience was the fact that Petrus made a huge fuss about our reservation (online bookings were closed out and when we rang, we had to literally plead to get a table) and yet there were at least 4 vacant tables on the Saturday we were there during the entire 2-hour period we spent at the restaurant. Also, I did not find the “discretionary” 12.5% service charge that was tacked on the bill to be particularly nice – but then, perhaps that is just me!

We had the Perfect Match special lunch menu they do in july and august with wines to match. The food was excellent and the sea bream the best I've ever tasted. But experience marred by the cheap skated behaviour over the ‘complementary’ macaroons. I went with my partner and we were each given a macaroon at the end of the meal and then a third one – which appeared on the bill at a charge of £1.50. Wasn't even that pleasant. As we didn't want to spoil what had been a lovely lunch we paid – but this kind of forced selling by Ramsay is appalling. I won't be going back.

Still my favourite from the Ramsay group!

JP looked after us a TREAT and you always feel very special when you dine there.

Food was amazing and the wine matched perfectly. The Pork Belly…well i'm still thinking about it now!

The Chefs table is amazing…really interactive – you can be as involved as you want and looks like a great night out!

Atmosphere…lots of tables booked but all speaking in mumours so we felt a little afraid to laugh at some points but JP forced some of his jokes out and I couldn't help myself!

Would definately recommend this as a must for anyone wanting to try out one of the Ramsays

I had a wonderful meal at Petrus. Food from the start to end was close to perfection.

While most fine dining establishment give amuse-bouche, generally this adds little to the meal experience other then the excitement of receiving freebees. Petrus amuse-bouche was a culinary delight, with each Amuse-bouche clean distinctive taste and highly enjoyable.

The starters and main were extremely good. Classical French cooked to perfection. Nothing complicated for fussy, but food that only attempts to highlights few tastes.
Deserts were off a good standard, but not to the quality starter and mains. But few fine dining establishment now a day’s do deserts justice.

Service was good, but not too the exceptionally high standard I would expect for such an establishment.

A superb lunch at Petrus , great food, great service and great value – suitable for both an occasion and a business meeting … and if you are like me and your preference is for a round table then you will like it here as all the tables are round.

DETAILS – A lovely welcome from the Maitre D but we decided to go straight to the table for our apperitif …the pre drink area was not particularly inviting … a little bit near the door , more like a waiting area and a little bit quiet being near the empty part of the restaurant – i particularly like an aperitif before going to the table and there are in fact very few restaurants that have a nice area for this…

I had brought my friend for his birthday lunch and need not have worried about getting a good table as it seemed to me there were no bad tables … it is a very well designed room .. while a quite large room it has the appearance of being in sections so—- as when i was there it was about a third full ..it didn't impact . however i would have liked a little more buzz as it was a little quiet… not sure what to say about the room itself .. it is beige with a luxurious carpet but is just missing something in terms of atmosphere that i can't put my finger on it … I do agree with a previous reviewer who said most diners seemed to be out for a “posh” lunch and not regulars or business groups … I think with the value service food this will change …

To the food … we choose the Perfect Match menu which is a special for February and incredible value … a mini tasting menu with wines ( £50) so all decision making handed over .. great wines with great dishes ( flavours still memorable) and quite generous portions .. with separate side dishes of vegatables served in little pots ..( the lunch menu is £24/£29 )

The service was superb . it was generous, warm , humourous but yet professional and really made an effort to add to the experience from the minute we walked in to leaving … The only part of the tasting menu I thought was under par was the dessett which is surprising as Petrus obviously has one of the best pastry chefs in london .. as a really lovely gesture the chef sent out the signature dessert with his compliments .. (a chocolate bomb . a chocolate cover melted with chocolate sauce to reveal icecream and honeycomb) . which I can still taste and will be returning to Petrus quite simply to order this dish again … and then as a birthday plate for my friend a portion of their creme caramel .which literally melted in the mouth … God I am so glad we tasted these dishes as they were without doubt best desserts I ever had .. even in Paris … but the entire meal was superb and the wines chosen by the sommellier were literally perfect so we left with a great sense of satisfaction .
The bill was £130 including two apertif and service charge .. ( if we had gone for the 3 course lunch menu it would have been even cheaper ) you won't do better for the quality of food … it just received its first star and I can see it getting a second one soon …

Petrus #3 doesn’t appear to have a great deal in common with Petrus #2. GRH have quite rightly not tried to transport the vaulted and velvet grandeur of the dining room at the Berkeley in what was previously a pub. The dining room itself is a nice space with a dramatic glass centerpiece holding several hundred bottles of wine. Besides this central feature there isn’t a great deal to comment upon and the décor is rather unremarkable and slightly sterile. The art that adorned the walls of Petrus #1 long gone together, presumably with the £44k lunches. My companion (his third Petrus also), did comment that the majority of diners in the restaurant appeared to be visiting for a “posh meal” rather than regulars or on business which was surprising given the Belgravia location.

The menu was not disappointing, we were dining on a Friday lunchtime so had the choice of lunch menu, a la carte or tasting menu which were £30, £50 and £65 respectively. Each contained a decent variety of interesting dishes. The small copper pans of vegetables on the table were a nice touch and the quality of cooking was good – with sensibly portioned main courses of Roasted Beef Fillet and Pork Belly cooked with precision and particular expertise demonstrated by the pastry chef (although Space Dust and Liquid Nitrogen is like going to see a magician saw a lady in half).

Overall good, but more La Fleur-Pétrus than Pétrus itself.

We've been for a couple of cheapy lunches here and there is much to like about Petrus. The venue is a pretty bland space and the wine “vault” in the middle of the restaurant an ugly piece of interior design. Get past that and the service is slick and friendly and the food precise and very tasty. Pretty plates arrive with Michelin touches – the venue is a solid bet for one star. Deserts are particularly strong and whilst the increasingly famous chocolate globe maybe a bit gauche and theatrical it is fun and a dramatic. Overall a strong re-assertion of the Ramsey groups abilities.

Gordon Ramsay’s latest opening comes in the shape of the re-vamped and re-located Petrus restaurant. The new location is so discreet that you could miss it, which in fact exactly what happened but I found it eventually. The décor is as you would expect of a Ramsay restaurant, plush with deep red fabric-covered walls and stylish cream chairs which are surprisingly comfortable. The A La Carte menu offers 3 courses for £55.00, the Chef’s 5 course tasting menu comes in at £65.00 but the real value is lunch menu which is priced at just £25.00 for 3 courses but could it be too good to be true? I have never been a big fan of set lunch menus as they are a bit of a cop-out at times but I want to see exactly what £25.00 buys you at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant these days so I decide to go for it. With Head Chef Sean Burbridge at the helm under the watchful eye of Group Executive Head Chef Mark Askew, my expectations are high.

Two little cones of popcorn are placed on the table, one seasoned with lemon and pepper and the other with smoked paprika, neither of which is my thing. Popcorn is not something I want to begin a restaurant meal with, it is awkward, chewy and always gets stuck in my teeth, which is fine if you are in the dark at a cinema but picking your teeth at the table of a any restaurant is something my mother taught me never to do. An Amuse Bouche is served but for the life of me, I simply cannot recall what it was but I do remember liking it.

For my starter, I go with the curried pollock fillet with braised lentils and cauliflower soup and my guest goes for the crab and salmon cannelloni. I do love cauliflower, especially in soup form and if it comes with fish and lentils, then even better. The crab and salmon cannelloni is beautifully presented in all its cylindrical glory, but for me the earthy curry spice of the pollock worked beautifully and paired with the velvety-smooth cauliflower soup it was the clear winner of the two dishes. My only gripe would be that they were a tad heavy-handed with the salt, but under-seasoning it would have been a worse crime.

Main courses are tricky for me as more often then not, I tend to gravitate towards red meat but if I eat one more beef cheek this year, I think it may turn me against them. Don’t get me wrong, I love a beef cheek but they have become so trendy and mainstream, that it has become impossible to avoid them, so against my will I go for the roasted chicken breast with confit leg, creamed leeks and caper jus. Chicken is not something I like to choose at a restaurant. It is usually bland, tough and utterly disappointing but after a recent meal at Galvin La Chapelle I became a convert and I am confident that I am in safe hands here at Petrus.

Our chicken main courses are tender, juicy breasts of chicken with a light sauce of creamed leeks, although I am not a big fan of the confit leg meat, a little too slippery for my liking. Two quaint little saucepans accompany our main, one containing potato Dauphinoise and the other steamed broccoli with a hint of lemon. It is all very nice, if once again a little to salty but generally another good course, especially where value is concerned.

For dessert we go for the chocolate sphere with milk ice cream and honeycomb and also the marinated pineapple with coconut pannacotta, lime and chilli syrup. The chocolate sphere arrives as a gold-sprayed chocolate ball amidst a sea of white foam. The waiter ensures he has our attention as he pour a rich, indulgent chocolate sauce over it and instantly the chocolate sphere is no more, melting in to a pool of chocolate with a honeycomb centre. One taste is all you need to realise just how fabulous this dessert is, it does make me think I have perhaps chosen the wrong dessert for myself but my marinated pineapple with coconut pannacotta is no less of a show-stopper and is every bit as delicious as it looks.

Well, I hate to say it but I am rather surprised and most definitely a little impressed. The staff are very friendly; the food is really very good and even better than that is the value you get with the unbeatable set lunch menu is almost unbelievable. It is early days yet, but if this is a taste of things to come then I would dismiss the foul-mouthed one just yet, I know we love to hate him, but we can’t seem to get enough of him.

Spoilt from the second we walked in, to the time we were coat-clad and ready to leave. Not bad considering this was only the 5th day after reopening. Greeted by charming people, we entered a room set out in curved theme, neutral and metallically laden, apart from a wall of rich red. The circular glass wine store was a dramatic focal point around which tables had been very well arranged.

Within this comfortable atmosphere, the pace of service proved excellent. Staff gave the impression that they were happy and relaxed as they went about their duties discreetly, knew exactly what they should be doing, and also managed to appear – as if by telepathy – just at the moment of need.

Two cones of pleasant pop corn, one smoked paprika and the other with notes of lemon and black pepper, made me unsure quite where this culinary journey might lead. I needn’t have pondered. Detailed preparation and presentation were impressive. Most of all so much attention had been allotted to flavour, such as in richly concentrated onion soup, bright watercress soup with a flavour depth to match langoustine tails, and a comforting side dish of thyme scented potato boulangere. Chefs (I think there were at least a dozen) knew how to make the individual flavours sing out harmoniously and with heavenly intensity. For a main course I considered the risk of ordering Lobster with cider? A succulent crustacean sitting very happily on pork belly with claw meat nestling within gem lettuce was the reward, making me realise just how wonderfully versatile this sea creature could be. Gressingham duck ‘billed’ as crisp-skinned was not, but other than that was perfectly cooked to order with a zingy beetroot and ginger accompaniment. Puds, though they sounded enticing, are hardly ever ordered by us and thank goodness we didn’t, as the treats just kept coming one after another.

Staff were pleased to let us step inside the wine store to marvel at the stock, and we were treated to a tour of the basement kitchen, aimed primarily to introduce us to the chef’s table located alongside. This rounded off our lunchtime extravagance rather well before we departed feeling indulged, satiated and with memories of some darn good food.

I was lucky enough to be invited for one of the soft launches for Petrus prior to opening and am happy to say it certainly lived up to my expectations. The dining room has a lovely look to it with the fantastic wine cellar in the centre of the room as the centre piece. It's quite an intimate venue but thankfully tables are not too close together. The menu was good and varied and the deliciousness of the dishes made it very difficult to decide, but a couple of the dishes do certainly jump out at you such as the Lobster tail with Pork Belly – An odd but remarkably well worked dish. Wines as you expect are excellent – A bible like wine list does a great job of catering to all tastes (and pockets!) Service was generally good although some of the staff seemed a little nervous – I think once they get into their stride however their confidence can only increase and it would after all be unfair to mark them down for this pre-opening. All in all and excellent evening out and I'll be rushing back especially with how reasonable the prices are.
