Square Meal review of Tenore: ? Write your own review

Tucked away on a quiet Islington back street, Tenore is the brainchild of two charming Sardinian brothers who preside over an airy dining room brightened up with cheeky posters of an old priest grinning from his Lambretta scooter & giggling girls eating gelato. A big, wood-fired oven takes pride of place in the kitchen, turning out a range of 30 different pizzas – all with wafer-thin, perfectly crisp crusts. Otherwise, the full menu follows the traditional Italian format, offering staples of prosciutto or tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms alongside Sardinian specials ranging from gilthead bream with broad bean purée & spinach to sebadas – sweet, cheese-filled ravioli drizzled with honey. To drink, the brothers sell their own-label wine made with red Cannonau grapes.

I've seen this restaurant go through several changes over the last few years but hope its latest incarnation is here to stay. We were delighted with the meal at Tenore the other evening; there's no shortage of good Italian restaurants in London but it's great to have somewhere that offers something a little different. The service was impeccable – friendly and efficient – and the food was very good. The pizzas are fantastic; there's at least 20 to choose from and they are HUGE and light and doughy with plenty of toppings. A main of fregola sarda (hand rolled couscous with shellfish and mussels) made a great change from risotto and was cooked perfectly. There's a number of other pasta dishes as well as the Sardinian specials and even the dessert menu has a wide range of choice although we were too full to sample anything more than a simple scoop of home-made stratiacella. Try the ‘house’ own-label wine; made with red Cannonau grapes, it's a light wine that makes for every easy drinking.
