Always packed on a Friday night, Kensington Wine Rooms has a fun, buzzy feel that is no doubt fortified by the copious quantities of wine by the glass it dispenses. Charge up your pre-paid card, then help yourself from a list that runs from everyday tipples to serious ‘event wines’ at intimidating prices. The restaurant is decorated like a wine shop, with Spanish-style stand-up tables for tapas, an area for tastings, & a slightly more formal dining area at the back. A £9.95 lunch deal does the business, while the carte offers European classics such as pheasant breast wrapped in Parma ham with red cabbage or rack of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes – plus wine recommendations to match each dish. Greenwich Meantime beers are also available, although that rather misses the point.
