It’s loverly inside the Britannia: cosy sofas, an upright joanna & dramatic swags of red, white & blue proclaiming the pub’s patriotic pride. The sun only needs peek briefly from behind the clouds, however, & everyone decamps outside. The beer garden backing on to Victoria Park is particularly appealing as the day draws to a close, the barbie’s in full swing, drinkers are lolling on the lawn, & all the little Charlies & Lolas have gone for the day (it’s a bit ‘Montessori’ here sometimes). Add-ons include a monthly artisan market, pub theatre & even puppy-training classes on the premises. Perhaps good food & good beer aren’t enough of a draw these days – not even when the beer is Adnams Gunhill or Meantime London Pale Ale, & dinner is a kilo pot of moules, a superior burger or lamb fillet with Greek salad.
